What Is llms.txt, and Does Your Business Website Need One?

4 min read

Contents

llms.txt is a plain text file in Markdown that sits at the root of your site (/llms.txt). It gives language models a short, curated map of your most useful pages. It was proposed in 2024 and is a convention, not a ratified standard. For most business sites it is a low-effort addition. It is not a ranking lever, and it does not replace sound content and technical SEO. If you want to see where it fits in a wider search and AI-visibility plan, leave a request for SEO + GEO work and we will review your site.

What llms.txt is

The proposal was published at llmstxt.org by Jeremy Howard in September 2024. The idea: a site's full HTML is noisy for a language model, with navigation, scripts and repeated blocks. A single file that names the site, summarizes it and links to the key pages in clean form makes those pages easier to read.

It differs from two files you may already know:

  • robots.txt tells crawlers what they may fetch. llms.txt does not control access.
  • sitemap.xml lists all indexable URLs. llms.txt is selective and written for readers, with short descriptions.

What the file contains

According to the llmstxt.org proposal, the file is Markdown with a fixed order:

  1. An H1 with the name of the site or project (the only required element).
  2. A blockquote with a short summary.
  3. Optional paragraphs with extra context.
  4. H2 sections, each holding a list of links with a short note per link.
  5. An optional section named "Optional", marking links a model can skip if it needs a shorter context.

For a business site, the useful pages are usually: what you do, services, pricing logic, process, case studies, contacts and key policies. Write each note as a plain sentence about what the visitor learns on that page.

Does your business site need one?

Short answer: it is optional, cheap to produce, and its effect is unproven. The proposal is not an internet standard like the Robots Exclusion Protocol (RFC 9309). Nobody can promise that a given AI product reads the file or that it changes how your business is mentioned in answers. We do not promise positions or timing from it either.

It makes the most sense when:

  • your site has documentation, a detailed service catalog or a knowledge base that users ask AI tools about;
  • your key pages are already clear, because the file only points to content, it does not fix weak content;
  • you can keep it current, since a stale file that links to removed pages does harm.

It can wait when the site is small, the pages are thin, or basic issues such as indexing, page structure and metadata are still open. Fix those first.

How to add and check it

  1. Choose 10–30 pages that best explain the business.
  2. Write the H1, the summary and one line per link.
  3. Publish it at /llms.txt and confirm it opens as plain text.
  4. Add it to the checklist you run when pages are added, renamed or removed.
  5. Run an agent-readiness check on the site and read the report as a list of issues to review, not as a score to chase.

Where it fits in SEO and GEO

llms.txt is one small item in the work of making a site understandable to both search engines and AI assistants. The larger items are crawlability, clear page structure, structured data, content that answers real questions, and reliable facts about the business. Cost depends on the scope of that work, so use the calculator for your case rather than a single figure.

FAQ

What is llms.txt in one sentence?

A Markdown file at the root of a site that summarizes it and links to its most useful pages for language models.

Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?

No. robots.txt sets crawler access rules; llms.txt is a curated, readable guide to content and does not block or allow anything.

Will llms.txt improve my rankings?

It is not a ranking factor we can promise anything about. Treat it as a low-cost clarity measure.

Who created the llms.txt proposal?

Jeremy Howard, who published it at llmstxt.org in September 2024.

How often should I update it?

Whenever key pages are added, renamed or removed, and during regular site reviews.

Can you set it up for my site?

Yes, as part of SEO and GEO work. Open the SEO promotion page, submit a request or use the calculator to describe your site and get a scope-based estimate.
